Rex Staal Helleberg was born on September 9, 1928 in Kearney to John and Elena (Staal) Helleberg. He attended Kearney State College from 1946-1948, whereupon he served in the United States Army’s Corps of Engineers as a Captain from 1948-1950. After serving, Helleberg received his Master's in Architecture from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.[1][2] In 1956, he joined the prolific Kearney firm of his father and brother, Helleberg & Helleberg. Helleberg married Marilyn in 1969, and they had two sons and a daughter. In 1989, Helleberg moved to Pennsylvania where he taught architecture and did architectural consulting. Helleberg died November 18, 2004 in Pennsylvania.[2]
