James Johnson was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa on August 29, 1934 to Paul and Geniveve Johnson. Before beginning his architectural career, he served in the army from 1954-1956. In 1960, around the age of 25, Johnson earned his Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, whereupon he was hired on as a draftsman then as an architect for the firm, Clark & Enersen, Architects, in Lincoln. Five years later, in 1965, Johnson opened his own practice, James A. Johnson, in Lincoln, which he operated until 1987. In 1987, Johnson became the architect and owner of Johnson Architectural Group, in Delray Beach, Florida. In 1997, Johnson moved his practice back to Lincoln.

Johnson was married circa 1979, around age 44, to Marlene Waits, and together they had one son, Gregg, and two stepchildren, Jim and Betty. Johnson and his wife founded the Blue River Vineyard & Winery in Crete, Nebraska. He was a member of the Mayor's Committee Major Zoning Problems, the Community Committee Tri Unlv, and the board of Justice Inc. Johnson died on April 15, 2003, at the age of 68.[2][4]
