Gilbert Button Nettleton (1828-1922), Carpenter-Architect

G. B. Nettleton, son of Alfred and Maria Button Nettleton, was born February 21, 1828, in Litchfield County, Connecticut.[8] He appears at Stockbridge, Massachusetts in the 1860 and 1970 censuses as a master carpenter. By 1878, he was advertising as an architect in a North Platte, Nebraska newspaper. He was still at North Platte in 1880, listed by the census as a carpenter. Later, he plied his trade as a house carpenter in Goldfield, then Colorado Springs, both in Colorado. By 1920 he was retired at St. Petersburg, Florida.
Nettleton was married to Charlotte Elizabeth Hull Nettleton, and together they had ten children.[8] Two of the sons also worked as carpenters. The Nettletons may also have been in McCook, Nebraska for a time, as he filed for a homestead there in 1873 and was issued a patent in 1878. He filed a second pre-emption on adjacent land in 1884, but that was cancelled by the government as an illegal second filing.[10] As Nettleton had taken a mortgage on that land, the mortgager filed a foreclosure on the property in 1890.[9] It was shortly after these events that Nettleton relocated to Colorado. He died August 26, 1922 at Colorado Springs, Colorado.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
