Arthur Guy Dole was born in Salem, Indiana, in 1871 to Minerva Jane and Daniel M. Dole. His father was a carpenter and contractor.[1] Arthur married Martha Blanche Norman in 1893 and they had a son and a daughter.[2][3] In 1900 Arthur was a carpenter in Columbia, Indiana, then by 1903 began a long association with architect Marshall S. Mahurin as a draftsman and later as an architect.[4][a] While he was born and died in Indiana, Dole had a highly peripatetic career, practicing in Indiana, Tennessee, Iowa, Missouri, and Oklahoma before working for at least two different firms in Omaha, Nebraska. Later he worked in Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana, and Michigan. Dole died in 1937 in Hudson, Indiana, survived by his widow, son, and daughter.[3][5]

Notes

a. Dole's obituary states that he joined Marshall Mahurin's office as a draftsman at age 18 (hence, c. 1889) but no other firm evidence of such an early association has been found. However, it may be suggestive that the son of Arthur and Martha, born about 1896, was named Marshall.[4] Marshall Dole was listed in Fort Wayne directories of the late 1920s as a draftsman for General Electric Co.
