Thomas Eugene Bachtold was born in Straum, Illinois on July 12, 1935 to Herman and Thelma Bachtold. He graduated in graphic design from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and earned a master's degree at the University of Illinois. He joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at the Lincoln (Nebraska) Air Force Base. Lt. Bachtold married Patty Joan Rutt, an elementary school teacher, in Lincoln. They were married nearly 40 years until her death in 2000.[1][3] Bachtold served in Vietnam as a pilot and was honorably discharged in 1971.[1][2]

1965: graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.[3]
