Pischelville, Knoxville, & Verdigre, Knox County, Nebraska, 1870-1892

AKA: Jan Srajer, Jan Schreier, John Srajer

Jan Srajer was born in Cista, Bohemia on April 22, 1827. He was married to Jana (aka Johanna and Jennie), and they had three sons, Emil, Vincent, and Raimond (Raymond) born in the Prague district before immigrating to the United States in about 1865.[4:388] The family lived for a few years in Chicago wile Jan Srajer worked as a cabinet maker. In 1870, the family relocated to Knox County where they would remain for many generations. Initially, the Srajers settled along Steel Creek near the Niobrara River in the Pischelville community.[2][3][4:388][5]] In 1890, the family left their farm in Western Township and moved to Verdigre, Nebraska where their descendants would lead their careers.

Srajer was one of the original Czech settlers in this growing Bohemian settlement, where he built his family home using his specially trained cabinet making techniques. Over the first decade in Knox County, the family evolved their last name to the more German-sounding "Schreier", and Jan changed his first name to John. His son Emil Schreier began a three-generation long lumber business and designed at least one building in Verdigre. Emil's son and John's grandson, Emil Paul Schreier, got his degree in architecture and became a notable Nebraskan architect. John Srajer died in 1892.[2][3][4:388][5]
