Thomas Eugene Bachtold was born in Straum, Illinois on July 12, 1935 to Herman and Thelma Bachtold. He graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, having studied graphic design and participated in track as a pole vaulter. He later earned a master's degree at the University of Illinois. Having learned to fly as a teenager, Bachtold joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at the Lincoln (Nebraska) Air Force Base. Bachtold served in Vietnam as a USAF pilot and was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1971.[1][2] Lt. Bachtold married Patty Joan Rutt, an elementary school teacher, in Lincoln in 1961.
